Innovating for sustainable agriculture
The Tropical Technical Institute was created in 2008 by the professionals of the banana sector in Guadeloupe and Martinique. It currently brings together some fifteen professional structures from the two islands involved in banana production and diversification crops.
In order to maintain a strong and permanent link with production and research, IT2 is an institute "without walls", hosted directly by producer organizations and public research bodies: Banamart in Martinique, CIRAD in Guadeloupe and UGPBAN at Rungis.
An association under the 1901 law, like most technical agricultural institutes, IT2 has been a member of ACTA (Animal and Plant Industry Institutes Network) since 2010.
Since 08 February 2018, IT2 is officially recognised as a qualified Technical Agricultural Institute by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
Commitments and Missions :
- To provide effective and sustainable technical solutions in the areas defined as priorities by professionals, by achieving the change of scale and the transfer of research results.
- Decision-making organization
The IT2 is organized around 2 councils:
- a Board of Directors made up of producers from member organisations whose role is to define, direct and control the general policy of the Institute;
- a Scientific Council made up of representatives of Research organisations, the agricultural profession and public authorities whose function is to contribute to the development of the programme of activities and to validate the technical relevance of the IT2's work.
Operational team
IT2 operates in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Metropolitan France with its own team and by establishing collaboration contracts with Public Research Organisations and other partners, leaders in their field.
The IT2 operational team is composed of about ten engineers and technicians.
This team is reinforced from time to time by external service providers, civic service volunteers, apprentices or trainees, depending on the needs of the various activities.
