Acta, head of the French network of the 18 agricultural technical institutes (professional organisations for applied research and technology transfer to farmers and all the French agricultural and forestry sectors), are firmly involved in the European dynamic within the framework of the EU’s research and innovation funding programme Horizon 2020.

To present an overview of these projects, Acta published the booklet of the 76 Horizon 2020 projects financed over the period 2014-2020 involving the French agricultural technical institutes. In close contact with the stakeholders in the field and producers, the agricultural technical institutes facilitate the co-construction of solutions, the appropriation of new techniques and of the results of applied research to develop agricultural and food systems at a European scale.

Technical, digital and organisational innovations are the best levers to accompany the transformation of agri-food systems. The 76 H2020 multi-actor projects and thematic networks demonstrate the commitment of the agricultural technical institutes to the renewed interdisciplinary approach of European Research & Innovation in order to meet the challenges of sustainability. They are naturally part of the 5 main themes of the H2020 programme in an agro-ecological approach:

  • Sustainable management of resources (water, soil, biodiversity, etc.) (27 projects)
  • Plant and animal health (21 projects)
  • Integrated ecological approaches from farm to territory (15 projects)
  • New opportunities for rural growth (5 projects)
  • Improving human and social capital in rural areas (8 projects)

For instance, the project « Pathways for transitions to sustainability in livestock husbandry and food systems » aims to reduce the impact of livestock farming on the environment. Coordinated by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and involving Acta, Idele –  Livestock Institute, IFIP – Pork Institute and Itavi – The technical institute for the poultry, rabbit and fish industries, this project aims to ensure a transition towards sustainability in livestock farming and food systems. Society demands good quality food while producers seek to reduce their environmental impacts. « Pathways » illustrates this dual challenge, both environmental and social.

Another example, the project ClieNFarms (Climate Neutral Farms), coordinated by National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE) and involving Acta, Idele –  Livestock Institute, Terres Inovia – Institute for oil and protein crops and hemp, Arvalis – Arable crops institute and ITB – Sugar beet institute, aims to have a strong impact on resource management and climate change in Europe. “ClieNFarms” will propose innovative solutions to create climate change resilient farms and is therefore in line with the objectives defined by the European « Green Deal ».

Finally, the project IPMWORK (An EU-wide farm network demonstrating and promoting cost-effective IPM strategies), coordinated by INRAE, involves 31 partners from 16 European countries, including Acta – the agricultural technical institutes and IFV – the French Institute of Vine and Wine. It aims to reduce dependence on pesticides and to share good practices via a network of demonstration farms.

Key figures for Horizon 2020 projects

The agricultural technical institutes are laureates of 76 Horizon 2020 projects, including 7 as project coordinators. The projects are carried out in partnership with the 26 other EU Member States. In total, they have received more than €23 million in funding from the European Commission. The high success rate in European project calls (30%) reflects the mobilisation of the network and places the Acta network in the Top 10 of European beneficiaries for the Agricultural Research and Innovation funds of the Horizon 2020 programme.

“The technical institutes are committed to advancing applied research and agricultural innovation on the general interest issues of competitiveness, European agri-food sovereignty, food, bioeconomy and sustainable management of agrosystems. The funding of research and innovation is crucial to effectively support the transformation of agricultural and food systems to better preserve biodiversity and adapt to climate change. The teams of the agricultural technical institutes are confidently looking forward to the new Horizon Europe programme (2021-2027) » says Anne Claire Vial, President of Acta – the agricultural technical institutes.
