The innov'action fot the plant quality

FN3PT (the national federation of seed potato producers), a technical institute in the seed potato sector, conducts along with regional producer organisations (Bretagne Plants, Comité Nord and Comité Centre-et-Sud) important research and development actions designed to encourage innovation and strengthen the quality and competitiveness of the French seed potato sector.

FN3PT is a technical organisation (an association under the French act of 1901) which brings together all seed potato producers and their regional organisations (known by their French initials OPs). The FN3PT/OP is responsible for the technical improvement of the quality of French seed potatoes and the development of their production and promotion, which translates into the following key tasks:

  •  The inspection and certification of seed potatoes, on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture
  • Improved methods for detecting and controlling potato diseases
  • Improved production techniques and technical advice for producers
  • Production of starting material
  • Plant breeding
  • The promotion of French seed potatoes
  • Support for exports

Significant research activities are conducted around the following themes:

  •  Ensuring the quality of certified seed potatoes
  • Mobilising genetic resources for varietal innovation
  • Developing innovative and sustainable production strategies
  • Strengthening the competitiveness of farms and the seed potato sector

The objective is the transfer of tools and knowledge for the benefit of stakeholders in the sector.

Research activities in the plant health sector seek to strengthen the guarantees on certified tubers, avoiding the development of new diseases and reducing the causes of quality non-conformance. The main research work concerns the improvement of knowledge and detection tools for diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and nematodes, the epidemiology of emerging diseases and the search for innovative control methods.

With regards to varietal innovation, the work aims to better characterise genetic resources and assist breeders in selecting new potato varieties adapted to the market and combining multiple criteria (precocity, productivity, cooking quality, suitability for processing, adaptation to production areas, disease resistance etc.). Given the context of limiting inputs, a particular focus is on how to accelerate the introgression of resistance genes to pests (mildew, nematodes, viruses etc.). FN3PT is also developing the genetic fingerprinting of potato varieties and manages a varietal database.

Adapting cultivation techniques to the specificities of the seed potato sector concerns all the different stages of the crop, from the production of starting material through to the technical itineraries for seed potato production. The work aims to adapt the quality of seed potatoes to new user requirements, to ensure the transfer of innovations, to strengthen the sustainability of crop management and the protection of users, and to promote alternative methods and the development of organic seed potatoes.
